The G.I.T.S start 2012 with a bang at El Chaparral
We got 2012 off with a bang at El Chaparral with a great turn out of regular and new players competing for the spoils on a fresh February morning, which reminded me more of an English spring day than the Spanish weather we have become so used too.
As the procession of buggies gently began moving out of the car park slowly funnelling into the single file decent towards the 18th green, I could not help but chuckle at Steve Mackenzie’s droll comment “bloody hell, it’s like trying to get out of Gibraltar !!”. The scene was set for what was to be a fun day.
In spite of the courses great condition so early in the year, scoring was tough with many of the guys complaining of tricky pin positions on the quick greens.
Congratulations go to our winner on the day Alan Vowls, who scored a very commendable 33 points off of his handicap of 9 winning him the first of our new G.I.T.S Bridgestone Golf Bags. Second, also on 33 points, but beaten into second place by virtue of Alan’s lower handicap was Dean Jeffries. Well done Deano, even if we did have to double and treble check your scorecard! We have to make a very big apology to Nick Holmes, as after awarding him what we thought was his legitimate third prize of the €50.00 Golf City Voucher, there was a stewards enquiry which resulted in us having to, very embarrassingly, ask for the voucher to be returned as Fran Whelan had the same score but with a lower handicap. Sorry Nick, but I am sure you will be amongst the prizes next time.
Nearest the pin was awarded to Stig Tamker for his shot of 11 meters from the pin on a very difficult 14th hole, winning him a lesson with Miguel Perez and an El Chaparral logo´d golf shirt. Gary Shuck absolutely walked away with the best scores on the par 5’s with an unbelievable score of 17 points, winning him one of our new range of logo’d golf shirts, and finally well done German Oshkordin for your guess of 200 blobs being the closest to the total of 213 “blobs” on the day. We should all be ashamed of ourselves allowing an average of nearly 5 “blobs” per card on the day!
Jess Winterbourne came up trumps winning the bottle of Moet, once again so generously donated by our days sponsor, Speed Financial Solutions.
Special thanks go to our good friends at El Chaparral. Antonio and his team always make us so welcome and do everything they can to make sure our golf days run smoothly. It is a super course run by very friendly people. Also, as always, thanks must go to Andrea and Amanda from Speed who support us so enthusiastically on a regular basis. If anyone needs financial advice, as far as I am concerned, there is not a more honest or professional company on the coast.
A final thank you must go to all the guys who once again supported our efforts to raise funds for the Malaga orphanage, Ciudad de los Ninos. Last year we raised nearly €4,000 for our chosen charity and this year, in our pursuit to better this figure, we have started off well by collecting €210.00 on our first outing.
., so for now….
“Keep ‘em down the middle”
Regards,
Barry. (G.I.T.S)
