Christmas time on Costa del Sol!

Lights and decorations fill the streets and the Christmas carols rings in every corner in this time of the year.  If you plan to spend Christmas time in Spain let us tell you about the Spanish traditions during this holiday.

Christmas Eve: In Spain, Christmas Eve is a bigger deal than Christmas Day and usually the family gathers at home for a large meal along with a visit to church for the Christmas Mass for the most religious.  Lobster is common, roast of some sort, usually lamb or a suckling pig and an abundance of other sea food , cheeses, hams, and pates. Dinner starts late, at about 10 p.m. and will go on for a couple of hours.

New Year’s Eve:  On this last night of the year, the Spaniards watch the clock in Madrid’s central square the Puerta del Sol, live on or TV.  The holiday would not be the same without the grapes. All throughout the country it´ s traditional to eat twelve grapes: one for each stroke of the clock at midnight. Supposedly this brings good luck throughout the year to anyone who accomplishes the task.

The Three Wise Men: This day is, for the people in Spain, the last day of the Christmas holidays and celebrates the arrival of The Three Wise Men. The parade of the wise men is very popular and each city celebrates its own with music and decorated carriages from where the dressed up “Wise Men” throw out toys and candy to the public.  At some point during the day it´s an absolute must to eat the dessert “Roscón de Reyes”.

An absolute must do together with the family during Christmas in Malaga is the route of nativity scenes with the Jesus Child in the crib. There are 61 different spread throughout the city, with the most prominent in the town hall and the cathedral, open from 1st of December. The Christmas lighting in Malaga is also spectacular and the area around Calle Larios attracts the most public, even though other places are very beautiful such as the historic center and its traditional Christmas market in the centre.
